I’m Still Fat But I’m Already a New Me

September 19, 2007 · 8 comments

I’ve been referring to my weight loss program as a journey to a new me.  I expect the journey to take two years although that is only the start - it needs to be for the rest of my life.

I’m down 14 pounds in the first month and a half or so of my journey and I’m pleased with that.  Nobody has noticed the weight loss and I don’t expect them to for awhile.  Heck, I don’t even notice it yet.

But while the journey is far from complete I have already done some things to tell me I am already acting as a new me.  Case in point is this week where I find myself in Chicago for a few days.  I travel quite a bit, averaging about 90 days a year for the last 6 years if you include vacations.  That’s a total of about 540 days on the road.  I can count on one hand the number of times I have ever brought work out clothes with me on one of these trips and even worse, I can count on one finger the number of times I have actually worked out on a trip.  Once.

Until this trip.

Monday morning I got up at 3:00am so I could get my normal Monday morning strength training workout in before I had to go to the airport.  When I got to the hotel that night the first thing I did after getting checked in was to hit their treadmill for some cardio.  Then Tuesday morning I followed my strength training plan as best I could given the foreign equipment and again on Tuesday night it was more cardio on the treadmill.  This morning I got in my strength training before checking out and heading into the office for the last day of my trip.

I packed workout clothes and I actually used them.  Truly I am already a new me.

whoo hooo! congrats to you :) It’s great when it starts to become a habit.

I’ll tell you, they may not notice it but I bet you feel it. I outmass you so my weightloss is even a lower percentage, but my sleep apnea is gone, so I KNOW what a difference those 15 or so pounds can make!

And attitude is EVERYTHING :)

Wow. You are a wild man, John. That is amazing, inspiring, and maybe crazy (3 am???) But crazy in a good way. Very, very cool.

Dedication… habit… whatever it is, 3:00am is crazy good! I’m so impressed with the changes you’ve made since the beginning! This is fun to see my fellow fatbloggers changing for the better, right before my eyes. Very motivational!

BTW… I love Chicago! Lucky you…

Thanks everyone! It’s funny that it is the 3:00am part that seemed to generate the most interest. I’ve actually been getting up between 4:00 and 4:30 anyway since I have started my strength training, so an hour earlier wasn’t a huge deal for me.

I’ll probably write some more on the experience I had exercising in the hotel, it was actually pretty fun.
