Bad Meal of the Day - McDonald’s Breakfast

[I am writing this while stuck in O'Hare Airport in Chicago- my flight that was originally scheduled to leave at 8:00 is now delayed until 10:30. The joys of flying!]

I’m still no expert at proper eating while traveling and today started in typical bad fashion - breakfast at McDonald’s. The Golden Arches happen to lay between my hotel and work and as I was checking out I already knew I was going to find myself eating there. Rather than talking myself out of it I justified it by telling myself I am no longer eating two breakfast sandwiches like I used to, and that a simple #2 would be all I would need, and really that isn’t that bad, if I recall it’s maybe 600 calories.

The problem, however, is that I noticed from the ads in the restaurant that they had introduced a new breakfast sandwich, the Chicken Biscuit. I am a sucker for trying new things but need to have the comfort of known things - which means that instead of replacing my Sausage McMuffin with the Chicken Biscuit I ended up going with both.

So that’s how I ended up eating two sandwiches (and a hashbrown) even though I was totally ready to just have one. And the thing is the new sandwich didn’t taste all that good either (it really could have used some country gravy for dipping).

As I was walking into McDonald’s this morning I knew I was going to be writing this about that meal but then it got even worse.

That just goes to show how important it is to stay out of there in the first place.

Weekly Update - 5/11/2008

  • Diet starting weight: 295
  • Week starting weight: 274
  • Today’s weight: 270
  • Week weight loss: 4 lbs
  • Total weight lost: 25 lbs

Feels good to see my weight chart move in the right direction again. Of course the cynic in me says losing 4 pounds in a week is easy when I had gained so much recently and I was sick for half the week, but I’m shutting him out and focusing on the positives.

Things I did well this week:

  • Started some strength training.
  • Not too many eating disasters (which going forward I will be documenting via my Bad Meals posts).
  • Once when I was looking for a snack I selected some sliced cucumbers instead of something bad for me.

Things I did not so well this week:

  • No cardio.
  • Not enough water.
  • Subway

I’ll start my week off in Chicago so I will be challenged with all that comes with travel, but I am resolved to get through it and continue to move the weight back down.

Here’s to a good week!

Bike Winner Announced!

My Fuji Bike Giveaway contest had more entrants than I expected, a total of 29 entrants with 13 of you getting an extra entry for giving the post a Stumble. Thank you to all the entrants! The total value of the prize package was almost $500, which is nothing to sneeze at. Pioneer Woman gives away $500 awards like they are tissue paper but for me this was a grand prize and it felt great to be given the chance to give it away to someone. Plus her contests usually have thousands of entries so your odds here were real good.

I did discover some weird things with Stumbleupon where someone’s stumble didn’t show on the review page for my post, but if I looked at their individual page their stumble showed. When someone told me they stumbled and I didn’t see it on the review page, I checked their personal page to verify. So, I suspect I may have missed a few of your extra entries if you didn’t provide me with your stumble id.

The interesting thing is, the winner only had one entry. And the winner was one of a few people who did not properly link to the contest post originally, but then changed it after I pointed out the requirement.

Think it was you?

I couldn’t get YouTube or Google Video to work with converting the video for some reason, so unfortunately I have to host it myself. Hopefully it will be viewable. There isn’t any sound this time because my microphone is broken but even if it wasn’t I probably wouldn’t have used audio because my nose is still all stuffed up!

Click here to view the video. If you won, send me your email address via my contact form and I will put Lipton in touch with you for fulfillment of your prize package.

Thank you to all the entrants and congratulations to the winner! I can’t wait to do this again some time.

Puppy Picture

Maddie

Since I have been as sick as a dog the last few days I thought I would post the puppy picture that has been requested a few times since I mentioned we got a new puppy. Maddie is a Chow Chow/Corgi mix and is about 11 months old. She has a really calm disposition - we’ve only heard her bark a few times and I think it was always when spotting a squirrel.

She came from a rescue shelter and it’s hard for me to believe she didn’t get snapped up right away as she is really cute, and a great convenient size - she’ll probably be around 30 pounds full-grown. We got lucky.

I’ve gone out on a couple of walk/runs with her and I think we’ll get out a lot doing that this summer.

Bad Meal of the Day - Subway Tuna Sub

A comment on Mike’s blog got me thinking about some things I need to do differently, one of which is improve my logging of meals. I’m finding that really hard to do, but I know I need to do it. So to start with I am going to try to write about the worst meal of the day, whether it was in terms of calories, portion size, maybe even taste - we’ll see as I go along. Of course I am hoping that knowing I will be writing about it will cause me to think twice before I order something bad - I will point out I didn’t think about writing this until I sat down with the already ordered meal below!

By far my worst meal of the day today was a 12″ Subway Tuna Sub with all the fixings, if I recall that’s a 1200 calorie sandwich not including the Fritos I ate with it.

What happened? Three things:

  1. Laziness. I worked until 7:00pm and knew there wasn’t going to be a meal waiting for me at home (takes me about 80 minutes to get home); I was going to have to make something or reheat leftovers. I didn’t want to make something. Fast food makes lazy people happy.
  2. Habit. Subway is one of those places I used to eat at a lot before I started this journey. I’m no Jared when I go there - I get the big boy sandwiches that are NO good for you. I have not been able to change my habit to a 6″ sub with ham and no cheese or mayo like I should. I know that would be enough for me but yet I still order the 12″ Tuna. I need to develop the habit of ordering something different.
  3. Stress. Lots of stress at work lately. I crave comfort food when stressed.

So there it is, that’s no diet right there. Let’s see if it is better tomorrow.
