How to Stress Less

This is a guest page by Sachin.

Everyone gets a bit stressed once in a while, but occasionally there can be periods in our life when this stress becomes unbearable and it seems like we are on a never-ending downward spiral. Don’t panic - that’s just the stress talking! It’s okay, there are simple things you can change immediately in your day-to-day life that will help you manage this stress better.

Determine the cause of your stress

It might not always be clear exactly why you are feeling anxious, and that’s completely normal. If it is possible though, the number one most effective way to help you stress less is to deal with the root of your anxiety. It may be that you have a lot of work on at the moment, a big deadline looming, money worries, or anything else. Avoiding working out exactly what it is will not help to alleviate your stress, only cause it to worsen!

Get enough sleep

This is absolutely essential. One of the most common ways we unintentionally cause ourselves to feel anxious is because we forget to look after our brain and body. It needs sleep to refuel and re-energise. Feeling tired because you haven’t been getting 6-8 hours of sleep every night will only serve to make you more grumpy and intensify negative feelings.

Make things easier for yourself

If there are some ways you can make life a little simpler, you should seriously look into investing. It might be something like buying a Bosch Dishwasher so that you aren’t spending an unenjoyable 20mins after every meal washing dishes by hand. It might be cutting back on an unnecessary weekly commitment, it might be asking someone else to give you a hand. Remember there is no need to feel guilt at any of this.

Embrace Routine

Becoming more organized and establishing a routine, particularly in the mornings, can help you feel more prepared and ready for the day ahead. Having a bad morning has an unfortunate tendency to shape the entire day - if we let it. Try and establish a routine that works for you: decide what time you will wake up each morning, what you will eat for breakfast (keep your Westinghouse Fridge stocked with your favourite brekky options), whether you will shower morning or night, and so on. Less rush and stress in the morning = less rush and stress in the day.

Exercise

Going to the gym, playing a sport, however you choose to get your exercise, you will feel better for it. Not only will this increase your fitness levels, you will be healthier, your brain will function better, and your overall quality of life will improve. You can start off with something as simple as walking home one day a week from work, or taking a stroll around the park in the evening, and build from there. The exercise and down time will also help you clear your mind.

Surround yourself with positive people

Misery loves company and negativity is contagious. Take a look at those in your life and make a conscious effort to be around friends who are upbeat and positive. This way you will have more of a chance to catch their mood! Also identifying the people who affect you negatively and making an effort to avoid them will help you manage your own stress better.
