Rate My Meals – 2010-11-29

Well this has certainly been a bit of an up and down day.

I started the day off with 30 minutes of lower body strength training, which felt great. I’m shooting for 6 days of weights this week.

I had to get a blood test* at the doctor and my blood pressure came in at 118/74, which puts me right in the normal range. Historically it’s been around 120/80 although the last time I was in it was 140 something, and I was worried that was not an anomaly. Who knows, maybe today’s was. In any case, I was happy to see those numbers.

*the results of which will either be nothing, in which case I won’t mention it again, or something, in which case I’ll probably find a topic for a whole ‘nother blog. I’m hoping it’s the former, but there are some silver linings in the latter.

Then tonight I was all gung-ho to put some time in on my treadmill, I installed the Couch to 5K app on my G2 (I had bought it on my G1 and hadn’t installed it on my new phone yet), and got about 8 minutes into the program when the treadmill died. Interestingly enough, this happened a day after I wrote that I was considering getting a new treadmill. That just may have to be accelerated. Pro Form? Horizon? Vision? Life Fitness? Anyone want to sponsor me with a new treadmill? I’d love to see a bidding war. :-)

So enough about that, how did I do eating today?

Monday Meals

Breakfast was oatmeal with pomegranate seeds, a banana, 8 oz of spicy hot V8, and a slice of toast with peanut butter. Lunch was a bento box with a chilled chicken breast (6oz pre-cooked weight) on top of a bed of herb greens, a small portion of pomegrant salad dressing, a kholrabi, grapes, mandarin oranges and a yogurt. Dinner was a chopped salad with herb greens, baby carrots, a tomato, an avocado, 2 mini portobello mushrooms, a baby cucumber, half an orange bell pepper, half a small fennel bulb, salt, pepper and balsamic vinegar. A small sloppy joe, a side of peas and some puiffed rice cake crackers. More v8. Snack tonight I had a Kind fruit bar.

I’m betting you’ll hate the sloppy joe.

So how do you think I did? Click a star!

That looks pretty good overall. You got a mix of veggies, some lean protein (the chicken, not the sloppy joe) and you had a good breakfast which looks like the biggest meal of the day calorie wise. Overall, even with the Sloppy Joe, it looks like you were around 1900 calories for the day? which is pretty low.

As for the treadmill, I’m hoping you get “sponsored” which would be very nice!

I think some protein in the breakfast would help fill you up and allow you to drop the toast. Maybe throw a scoop of whey into the oatmeal. Also wasn’t a huge fan of the fruit bar as a snack — go for real fruit! Other than that, not bad… Good luck with the treadmill

I actually disagree with Mark’s estimate, I was guessing the calories were more around 2200. It is hard to tell with the variety of food that you eat. Pictures can be tricky. What I am assuming is 1 cup could really be half a cup. The one thing I have noticed is that you are eating a lot more types of food than I do. Most of your meals contain 4 or more calorie sources, mine probably are more like 2 with some being 3. Its not a bad thing or a good thing, just an interesting thing I noticed.

The Sloppy Joe could be the wild card here as far as estimating calories are concerned. That highlights the need (at least for a while) of counting calories to make sure you are eating what you think you’re eating. I try to do a couple of weeks of counting calories at a time (a few times a year) to reconfirm that my typical diet is providing the calories I think it is. Once I am familiar with what I’m eating I can get pretty close in estimating calorie intake without actually counting them.

Hi John,

What a delicious assortment of fruits and vegetables you have there. It makes me want to go grab some grapes right this second. I love that you have hardly any processed foods in your pictures. I’m sorry to hear about your treadmill woes. But I will be interested to see how the Couch-2-5K program works for you. I’ve been thinking about doing that myself.

Chris nailed the thing I was disappointed with myself for eating - that Kind bar. I had it for a snack at night and just didn’t need it, and it’s 200 calories.

John, I didn’t run this one through the calorie calculator but I think you are probably closer with your 2,200 than the 1,800. The Kind bar put me over the edge for sure, that was 200 calories that I simply didn’t need. Tonight I had a small bunch of grapes instead.

Mark, I think I’ll for sure try to do that on the days I eat easily calculated food, if I can. I think I do have a pretty good handle on how many calories things have from doing this exercise in the past but I could be fooling myself.

I forgot to respond to John’s observation of the variety of foods I am eating - that’s an interesting observation, and I would say it is true. I guess part of me feels like I can throw a bag of baby carrots on top of the pile for free. In fact I read recently that Weight Watchers is changing their calculator so that all fruits and vegetables have zero points? That doesn’t seem right to me. But adding a different food here, throwing a pepper into the pile here, it feels like I need to do that to stay interested in what I am eating. I think. I’ll be watching this one.

Thanks Elle, I suppose the toast would count as processed food? Check out my post from today when I put it up, I don’t think I had any processed food unless the yogurt counts.

Not bad John. You got everything you need. I actually feel jealous about how you came up with this kind of post. This is such a great idea. Might as well try those stuff myself and be more healthy.
