How Whey Protein Can Aid Your Fat Loss Efforts

September 17, 2010

This is a guest post by Joe Johnson.

Whey protein is essentially condensed milk powder with virtually all of the carbohydrates and fat extracted from it, it has been around for some time but has gained popularity recently with explosion in interest around fitness and weight training. The powder used to be difficult to mix and flavourless at best, nowadays whey protein powder comes in an array of different flavours as diverse as cookies ‘n’ cream and summer fruits! Whey protein is still very much associated with the hardcore blood sweat and tears sport of bodybuilding, this is unjustified however and brands are making an effort shake this tag. This is great for consumers because many looking to lose weight would actually benefit from including whey protein in their diet.

Of course it is always important to try and eat ‘real’ food over dietary supplements wherever possible, but I’d argue that Whey has such an excellent nutritional profile that it warrants the status of ‘whole food’. I say this because it has a very high bioavailability level, this is the amount of protein that can be absorbed and used by the body, it is also high in amino acids and some brands will have added vitamins and minerals. Two scoops of Whey is about the equivalent to 200g of grilled chicken breast, but while chicken needs grilling, slicing up and takes a good chunk of time to eat, whey protein can be prepared and consumed in an instant making it highly convenient.

Protein takes a long time to break down in the body and is therefore very filling, this means a scoop of protein and a handful of nuts or a piece of fruit makes an excellent, healthy low carb snack that will keep you satisfied for a good few hours. If exercising regularly, whey will also help your muscles to recover quickly, allowing you to go into your next session firing on all cylinders. So there you have it, Whey is great for fat loss as well as muscle building. Get a tub today and use it when you are short of time or fancy an alternative to grilled chicken!
