The Sweet Smell of Wet, Stinky Gym Clothes

November 5, 2008 · 5 comments

So far I feel pretty good about the first week of my Kick Ass November. I’m not documenting what I eat every day, darn it, but I am watching it and I’ve been pretty good. Where I am definitely excelling is in getting back on my exercise plan. So far this week I have done my strength training program each morning, Monday through Wednesday and yesterday I did cardio as well, which I plan to do every other day for starters.

I’m so sore right now!

For the strength training, the upper body workout I did yesterday was the first one that I have done since the beginning of May. Every time since then that I have tried to get started again on the program I’ve started with lower body, and since I never put two consecutive days together, I never ended up doing upper body.

For the cardio, I restarted at week 4 of the Couch to 5k and I was doing it exactly so until the last 5 minute run. My heartrate did not drop below 150 during the walk period prior, and it quickly shot up to 170 in the run and I just couldn’t keep it there so I needed to walk. Still, I felt good to only have to go back to Week 4, and tomorrow I’m shooting to nail it 100%.

So, now I’ve put three consecutive days of exercise together and it feels great. Doesn’t feel great being so damned sore, but it does feel great to be throwing wet, stinky clothes in the dirty clothes basket.

That means I’m working at it. That means I’m kicking ass in November!

Good on you John!

I go through heaps of laundry as well. ;)

Fantastic. I love feeling sore from a great workout.

Oh, but watch putting those sweating clothes in the dirty clothes basket. Soon, the basket will smell, not to mention the wet clothes will start to get moldy.

Yeah, good points. My hamper is really just a plastic laundry basket so I think it will be OK, but you are right about the wet clothes. I am doing more laundry, that’s for sure!

Question, do you think it is better to start cardio first? I usually hit the treadmill on level 3 declined for about 30min for a warm up then hit the weights. I do however enjoy the elliptical machine more but my home gym does not have one. I also don’t eat before my workout in the morning. I try to get in at least 4 days a week not trying to burn out I am still in the beginning stages. I was thinking about adding supplements maybe a protein shake, what you think? Low carb type?

Well I save cardio for last because it wipes me out more than strength training does. Nothing scientific about it, that’s just the order I do it in.

Three cheers for three consecutive days of exercise!

You know, if you need a bit of motivation, you might consider trying to complete the Active Lifestyle Challenge on the http://www.presidentschallenge.org site. It took me a while to get myself consistent enough to do it, but I did!

I didn’t sign up for that when I first started but I just couldn’t get into it for some reason.

Personally I like to do 5 days with 2 days off. Three days weights and cardio and two days all cardio.
