A Weight Loss Blog About Nothing

October 8, 2008 · 10 comments

Seinfeld was famous for being “The show about nothing” and it’s time for this weight loss blog to take the same approach. Now I know what you are thinking, and it’s “But John, you haven’t been posting at all - this already is a weight loss blog about nothing!” and frankly you wouldn’t be far from the truth, but that isn’t what I mean.

Part of what has been holding me back from posting on here is that I don’t feel like I have anything to say. As in success, as in making good decisions, etc. But then the weeks go by and I lose touch with the audience that has certainly helped me in the last year. As I thought back to my first year of blogging on this blog I remembered that a lot of my posts were truly just describing the decisions I made during the day as it pertained to food and exercise. Let’s face it, we all make a lot of choices throughout the day and examining how we make those choices can help us (and you) with where we want to go.

So while it may seem when thinking about it to be all about nothing, I think once I put pen to paper (as it were) that what will come out will be thoughts that might actually help.

Take today for example. I’ve been trying to follow my health scorecard and I’ve had limited success. For one thing I will say my dentist will be happy with me! So I made sure I flossed, brushed my teeth and used mouthwash. I took my vitamins. I had a good breakfast, morning snack, lunch and afternoon snack. So far so good.

Then my wife called and said she wanted to go to Olive Garden for dinner. No problem, I thought, I can still eat OK there. I ordered an iced tea and their grilled salmon with vegetables. Only had one bread stick and a little salad. Still a bit too much but not bad. But then my son didn’t like his half-order of Chicken Alfredo and the next thing you know the somewhat healthy (and half-eaten) fish and vegetables were in front of him and the Chicken Alfredo was staring back at me! And of course I wolfed it down, not having prepared for such a turn of events.

Drat!

Now as I finish the night I am not eating after 8:00pm and I will (there just did it to make sure) take care of my oral hygiene tonight, so other than dinner I think I did pretty good. Well, except I didn’t break a sweat today. So far from perfect. But I think I did all right.

So that is what a weight loss blog about nothing consists of. That, and I’ll try to highlight some of the new and old fellow fat bloggers I read these days, interesting products, etc.

Oh, and next week my wife and I are going to Playa del Carmen for 5 days at an all-inclusive resort. Now that is going to be a challenge!

Seinfeld is my favourite show and this has always been one of my favourite blogs so lets see how we go!

Mine too - just recently got through Season 8 on DVD. Even though I have seen them all dozens of times. :-)

I’m not sure what frame of mind you have to be in too succeed at dieting. But I’m not there either, and it’s been a long time.

Let’s figure that out together!

I can relate to your eating out episode. My mom lives with my me and my husband. When we go out to eat, she always says they give her too much and ends up taking 3/4 of her dinner and putting it on our plates. Of course, I hate wasting food when I’ve paid a pretty penny for it……so I eat it. Ugh….I go home stuffed and mad at myself for eating so much.

Hope you have a great time on your vacation. I look forward to hearing about your trip.

I think we got raised not to waste food and to know the value of a dollar - I have the same problem. I recently read a blog posting on sunk costs that are related to that situation, I need to find that…

Sometimes it’s good to take a step back and look at the why’s and what’s and how’s of your blogging AND weight loss.

I’ve been doing the same this week, myself.

Not only sometimes but I’m beginning to think it just needs to be a part of the routine.

something I started doing was not trying to be an expert at weight loss, which I am definitely not. Thats the whole point of blogging about trying to lose the weight. when I have nothing to say I dont say it, when I do, I say it.

make this blog whatever you want it to be. write about whatever you want to write about and dont try to be anything to anyone. its worked for me…

Thanks for the reminder Israel. I’m no expert either but hopefully even so people can learn from me. Right now, mostly you can learn about what NOT to do!

Good post. I’ve been there many times in the past when me and the wife have gone out to eat. I started good but couldn’t finish the same way. I say enjoy your vacation and you’ll come back recharged. Have fun!

Thanks Joe - I’m really planning to. I’m not bringing my Blackberry, I’m telling you that.

As long as you don’t let us all act like Kramer and crash your place, eat your food, etc. I think it’ll be fun. Life gets in the way and sometimes that’s what makes the best posts.

Ah what the hell, you are all welcome. I’ll lay out some virtual cereal for everyone. :-)

Write about your life as it relates to your weight. (which is pretty much everything) Sometimes the best posts start out as a simple small idea or thought and just expands from there.

I’ll keep reading as I can relate to a lot of what you write about.

Good luck on the Vacation, just enjoy it and relax. You’ve got 360 other days to work on your weight :)

Thanks Steve. I may actually bring my workout clothes, I haven’t decided yet. They do have a small gym and my wife is not an early morning person, so I could get in some exercise every day. I am close to deciding to do it.

You wrote, “Part of what has been holding me back from posting on here is that I don’t feel like I have anything to say.”

But John, that’s exactly the definition of a blog. Don’t let a little thing like that hold you back. *wink*

Keep up the good work.

LOL, aint that the truth!
