Goals For The Week of 7/21/08

July 21, 2008 · 8 comments

Given the success of my goal setting last week I decided I would try again this week. In yesterday’s update I mentioned my schedule was a little turned around this week with a travel day but I was only talking about my work schedule - I completely forgot that my wife and I are going to Boston this Fri, Sat, Sun so this week is going to be a big challenge after all!

Goal #1: I am going to complete week 4 of the One Hundred Pushups Challenge.

Goal #2: I am going to run Tuesday night. Why this goal? Because Tuesday night I’m going to be at work staying in a hotel. Exercising while traveling for work is one thing I need to continue to work on improving.

Goal #3: I am going to run in Boston. First, it’s fun to run in a “foreign” city. But most importantly, as in Goal #2 I need to incorporate exercise into my vacation travel as well.

Goal #4: I am going to replace 4 meals with a whey protein shake. I really liked the feeling of doing this last week and believe incorporating these into my diet is going to be a big help for me.

Unlike last week I did not include a “lose X pounds goal.” I did this not because I think such short-term achievement goals are not useful (I think they are) but because I will not be doing an official weigh-in this week since I will be out of town on Sunday. However, I am hoping I can continue to push that chart down and in a couple of weeks when I do record my official weight I’m expecting to see it down a couple more pounds.

Here’s to a good week!

clarifying

youre replacing FOUR ENTIRE MEALS with a shake?

Im curious to see if youll end up hungry?
I think I might…. but who can say and it’s SO TEMPTING here as well in that I freeze my shakes and it’s gonna be on the 100′s all week.

4 meals with 4 shakes, throughout the week. For example, I had a shake this morning for breakfast. That’s 1/4 for the week.

You know what? I think you just whacked me upside the head (in a good way). Making “I’m going to lose X pounds by Y date” a goal is all fine and good but focusing on the the tried and true activities that help you lose the weight (like you’re doing) is probably more effective. I have yet to achieve any of the weight loss goals I’ve set for myself. It seems I have consistently come up a little short or a little late each time.

Maybe a change in perspective is just what I need to plow through to the next level. Thanks!

I’ve done this and found it to be a big help.

Those sound like worthy and achievable goals John.

Good luck with Week 4 of the challenge. I started it late last week, Day 3 for me tomorrow. I hope I get to week 4 without quiting.

Great goals, John. Even though I lived in the Phoenix area for almost 10 years before moving to Georgia, I never ran there, so I echo your sentiments of running in a “foreign” city. Hope you have lots of fun!

John, I love the idea of goal setting and putting pen to paper as it definitely makes you feel more accountable.

As for the protein shakes, I’m a fan and often have a protein shake for breakfast in addition to a post-workout drink. With that said, I personally feel whole foods are preferable from an overall nutrient standpoint.

Are you modifying your supplements (read: vitamins) to ensure you’re getting the appropriate nutrients in to your diet?
