Congrats on a very difficult thing to do--write down everything you eat and stick with it! A few years ago, I did the same thing and it helped me lose over 40 pounds in 6 months. The good news: once you get to your goal weight, you can toss the journal, if that is also a goal.

peace,
mike

Recently there was a study about keeping a food journal. There seems to be a positive benefit to keeping a daily food diary.

Here's the link to an article about the results of the study: http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20080708/keeping-food-diary-helps-lose-weight

I was keeping track of my daily food intake and calories burned on sparkpeople.com. It's was super easy to keep up with when I'd log in at the end of each day.

Congrats. Do you hand record everything? I recently started using Sparkpeople to record my nutritional intake. It is nice since it gives you lots of neat and helpful charts.

I use The Daily Plate

Way to go, John. This is something I would definitely have a hard time with...this is indeed an example I could stand to follow.

I find a food diary necessary and do it every day, but I have a daily planner so I have to be on schedule anyway. I add my food up at fitday - sometimes the next day from notes - and it gives me a good idea of what I need to increase or reduce.

I'm sure intermitant food journalling is valluable too. Once you can eyeball portions its not that necessary to do it daily.

Keep up the good work.

Good stuff! I can't journal every day but I do like to do it every once in a while just to check that I'm still on track.

Nice work John! I definitely think its a good thing to take inventory once in a while - good reminder of how much you can actually eat and still do alright weight-wise, particularly if you are working out as you do.
