Swimming Pool

I don’t believe I have mentioned it before, but we have an in-ground pool. We put it in 4 years ago or so and if you don’t try to calculate the per-swim cost it’s been great. The idea behind getting the pool was that the kids and their friends would tend to congregate at our house, and so then we could keep an eye on them. So far it’s worked.

Having a pool when you are overweight is interesting. On the one hand, it’s a great opportunity to get some exercise in. On the other hand, you don’t find yourself swimming much because you don’t like to take your shirt off in public. So I don’t use it as much as I would like.

I’ve started trying to use the pool more for exercise lately - last night was the third time in the last couple of weeks that I have swam 50 laps with a timer. Our pool is 20×44 feet with the last 4 feet being steps, so each lap is 40 feet. 50 laps is 2000 feet then, or about 2/5ths of a mile. My times so far have been 21:48, 21:32 and last night, 19:48. I’m going to simply work on getting that time lower and lower.

I don’t exactly glide through the water with grace, but what the hell, exercise is exercise.

I think that is a good initiative. U should set up a bike machine by your pool, n that with jog around the pool or on the spot you could get a little triathalon going! Get the kids involved as well

I love swimming — am very jealous that you have a pool at your house whereas I have to travel 5 miles to my local leisure centre! Also pleased to hear that you managed to LOSE pounds in Vegas!

Best wishes,
Sharon

^^ I never thought about doing the triathlon.

I know swimming is an excellent workout, my only problems are I don’t have a pool, and I can’t swim.

LOL, those would be problems!

Swimming is such great exercise. I used to have a olympic pool next to my house and I was regularly going but then I moved and haven’t swum since.

I like the idea of a ‘John is fit’ triathlon!

Whew, an Olympic sized pool would be some tough laps!

Hey, John! I’ve been really busy lately and haven’t been reading many blogs, but I did want to come by and let you know I got my Fuji bike from Lipton! Woot! I posted photos on my blog. Thanks again - a MILLION for hosting the giveaway. (We can’t find the coupons, but did find the check for $75 for assembly. Hoping the bank won’t give me a hard time since it’s made out to JANE instead of June.

Sweet!

Maybe the cost per swim is high but the pool is private and that’s a great advantage. You can also jump in whenever you want.

True, but only private to a point. It’s not like we have a huge wood fence up around it. Still, it’s not when I’m alone that is the problem. :-)

We have an above ground pool and love it. Our pool workouts include swimming, pool jogging and tag. We filmed our pool workout and posted it at my blog. You really can get a great workout in a pool.

Love your blog!

I love the idea of making a video of having fun in the pool!
