Why don't you try an appetite suppressant? I know, I know, that sounds super shady and icky. But I don't mean diet pills... I rather like this: http://www.pastoreformulations.com/product_p/005.htm.

It's an all natural supplement with no caffeine or stimulants so I don't think you'd be risking your heart. The main ingredients were used as appetite suppressants by tribes during long hunting trips. Scientists only found out about these plants recently and extracted the ingredients for supplements very recently.

I think there are good days/times and there are low days/times and pretty much, in my years of trying to lose weight, I've come to the conclusion that managing those days/times is the key to successful weight loss.

It's very easy to lose the weight when all is going well and the plan is working, but when the chips are down, how do we cope! Key for me!

Boy, isn't that the truth. I've used a poker analogy before, but another one would be that poker is mostly not about focusing on doing things well, but rather not making the mistakes. So focus on managing those down days.

John, you have been an inspiration to so many people (myself included). I've had meltdown after meltdown and I must say that out of all the disappointments in my life, these hurt the most. Reading your blog, along with many other weight loss blogs has been a great help and inspiration to me (so much that I decided to start my own as well). Every time that I've fallen, I've managed to pick myself up again and hit it just a bit stronger than before. Sometimes I think it's the only way I can learn to stick with something.

You've done it before. You can do it again. Can't wait to read future posts about how you did it! :)

Thanks for the kind words - and for sharing your new site. Bookmarked!

Hey John,

Hang in there. Just remember that trips, stress, family and buffets are always going to be in your life so you might need to find a better way to deal with them.

You can stop this slip before it becomes a slide.

Good point Steve - you are right that you can't hide from those things. So many long term habits to knock off...

Hey there John! Maybe if you think back to your motivation for starting this weight loss program, that will help.

I'm struggling too. I'm struggling to find time to write anything in my own blog. But I find if I go back and read my old posts it helps motivate me to continue moving.

Your blog has been a huge part of my motivation for nearly a year now. Go back and read through it. We can do this John!

YOU can do this... I know you can!

Thanks so much Georgie! We've both shown that over short periods we can do it, time to get focused on doing that again first and then look long term.

@Steve v4.7: Great comment. It's the deciding and the doing that is the thing.

I definitely agree with Israel, Lisa, Andrew, and the rest of the gang - but one other idea? Lately I have been reading a lot on motivational techniques outside of the diet and exercise world, for the purpose of inspiring action in my diet and exercise habits. While I've never actually done the Getting Things Done system, many of the ideas I think apply to health - identify your daily, weekly, monthly, and lifelong objectives, and set a course. Get up early, and do the important things first. Your health has GOT to be in the top 3... Do those things first.

Leo's ZenToDone eBook (ZenHabits.net) really is useful for this, by the way. Well worth checking out.

Don't lose heart...we're all rooting for you!

Thanks! I utilize some of David Allen's principles in how I manage my email, I'll have to take another look at the book to see if I can apply anything to my health regimen.

There's lots of encouragement, inspiration and motivation above my paltry comment (and lots to follow, I'm sure). The thing is, John, you've lost significant weight in the past- so you KNOW what it takes and you KNOW you can do it. DECIDE and DO.

And hey, if you need any more encouragement, go to the same blog I initially went to: http://www.johnisfit.com (it really helped me!).

Wow, what a great reminder - thanks Steve!

"So I’m gaining weight and inches, I’m not exercising and I’m stressed."

I feel like this sentence was written backwards. It should read... "I'm not exercising and I'm stressed, so I'm gaining weight and inches." I don't know about you, but stress plays a huge factor in whether or not I'm able to stay on plan. When work (or other stuff) starts to stress me out, and I find myself exhausted at the end of the day, it's *that* much harder for me to make the right choices. In fact, it's mostly impossible. That said, I feel your pain. Hopefully, work/life demands will ease up soon and you'll find that you have more time/energy to devote to yourself. *fingers crossed* In the meantime, it's good to see an update from you. Keep that chin up!

j

Bingo, you are absolutely correct - that is the order. Thanks for the well wishes!

You should not feel stress. What's done is done. The charts starts looking scary...I agree with fatbastard, now it's the decision time. Get back on track NOW! Come on what can you do now right at this moment? :) You don't have to do everything perfect. Just start something, it'll add up to the good habits. Maybe trying to lose weight all the time put you into stress. How about just trying to maintain the weight for a while?

I could be wrong but I don't think I was getting stress from trying to lose weight, although I suppose it could have had some impact - but mostly it was work related stress. Thanks for the reminder about not needing to do everything perfect, that is so true.

Just start something, it'll add up to the good habits. Maybe trying to lose weight all the time put you into stress. How about just trying to maintain the weight for a while?

I could be wrong but I don't think I was getting stress from trying to lose weight, although I suppose it could have had some impact – but mostly it was work related stress. Thanks for the reminder about not needing to do everything perfect, that is so true.

Recognizing the problem is the start. But, unfortunately it is just a start. This is a journey and when you make a wrong turn on a journey, you have to make the proper correction and get back on track.

You're posting, but do you really want to do something about it? Decision time.

Good luck!

Decision time indeed. Yes, I do want to do something about it, damnit!

"And I’ve strayed significantly from my diet and exercise plan."

We've all been there. Major kudos on the honesty. I know you can turn it around.

Thanks John. I know I can too, but it takes momentum in the right direction and right now it's taking awhile to turn the ship around.

I agree with both Israel and Andrew. Buffets, schumfets, it's up to you do plan and find a way to move forward. I've been where you're at, and planning and keeping yourself motivated by writing are the best way to go............:)

It's all a matter of choice.

Planning is the key, I had a plan once and I have to get back on that plan.
