Andrew recently wrote about his transition from “Mr. Meat” to a vegetarian, which has netted him great weight loss success. In his post he refers to South African boerewors rolls as the Food of the Gods, and I have a hard time arguing with him (despite a pretty unappetizing picture!) because I lived in SA for 3 years and ingested many a boerewors. And steak, and lamb, and all sorts of wild game - pretty much anything that could be tossed over an open flame.
Some of my favorite childhood memories involve going to a farm and spending the day preparing the wood fire in the braaivleis pit, standing over the burning meat, flames and smoke, and gorging on pounds of wonderful, succulent sausages, steaks and chops.
I remember seeing braais created out of old wheel rims, with bed springs used for the grill. Old, rusted 55 gallon drums were popular, as were concrete blocks.
I love this video on braaivleis etiquette, but I can’t get over how modern and American the setting looks what with the Weber grill and charcoal briquettes. I guess my memories of the good old days will have to suffice. Maybe they still do it the old fashioned way in the country.
