Analyzing The Weekend

January 8, 2008 · 6 comments

As I wrote in my update yesterday I didn’t have a good weekend diet-wise and that contributed to a gain for the week.  Now is the time to go back and analyze what happened so that I can do better next time.  I really don’t know where this post is going to go since I have been trying to not think about it, so I’m just going to start from the beginning and see what comes out.  Since I did not record what I ate obviously what I’ll write about represents the best case scenario - most likely I have left out a lot of eating that I forgot about.

We left on Friday afternoon at 4:00pm.  The plan was to get as much driving in as we could during the daylight, then find somewhere quick to eat around 7:00pm before arriving at the house we were renting in Northern Wisconsin.  Of course quick means McDonald’s.  At this point in the trip I was thinking about my diet.  I drank a bottle of water during the drive and at McDonald’s I had a grilled chicken sandwich and a water and that was it.  I didn’t order fries and I didn’t nibble on anyone else’s either.  I had a piece of gum for dessert.  So far so good.  I was thinking about my diet and taking appropriate action.

We got settled into the house at around 8:00pm and one of the other guys we were with started drinking beer.  I opted for water.  There was Gorp, there was chips, there was a lot of food available and from what I can remember I didn’t eat any of it.  I went through 3 or 4 bottles of water before we went to bed at around Midnight.

At this point I have to say I’m doing well.

Saturday morning I ate a banana, a couple of caramel rolls and a cup full of egg bake for breakfast. I was no longer thinking about my diet.  Just like that.  We were at a kids basketball tourney during the morning and at about 11:00 my kids and I went to the concession stand for a treat.  My daughter bought a bag of pretzels and my son bought a candy bar.  I decided I needed two hot dogs and a bag of potato chips.  This was only a few hours after eating a big breakfast.

I had a big bowl of chicken chili for lunch later in the afternoon.  I munched on Gorp.  I ate some oranges.  I did get a little exercising in with some snowshoeing but it was not enough.  Lasagna for dinner.  And pizza.  Chocolate cake.  A bowl of Twizzlers.  More Gorp.  Some chips.  Oh and I switched from drinking water to drinking wine.  Sweet German wine.  There was some healthy options available.  We had energy bars and salad available.  I didn’t have any.  I know I ate some chocolate cookies at some point.

Breakfast on Sunday was leftover egg bake and left over lasagna.  Enough for 3 people surely.

On the way home we stopped at McDonald’s again.  I went with the crispy chicken sandwich this time, and while I still didn’t order any fries I did eat almost a whole order out of my family’s orders.

I knew going into the weekend that it was a recipe for a disaster and while I started off on the right foot I fell into a grazing habit very quickly the first morning there.  Because I did so well on Friday night that tells me I can do it.  I didn’t feel any peer pressure to eat or drink that night, and so there should have been no reason I couldn’t continue with that.  I don’t think there is any reason for me straying other than laziness.  I didn’t think about my diet when I woke up and from that point on it was downhill.  I bet if I had started that day out better I could have kept it going.

I really appreciate all the great comments I have received over the past week - I’ve been remiss in responding to them but hope to rectify that soon.  Unfortunately tonight isn’t going to be the night because it’s already 10:00 and I have to get up in 5 hours to go to Chicago again for a couple of days.

I’m bringing my workout clothes and a focus on staying on the straight and narrow.

How cool is it that, no matter what we do, no matter what the outcome, it was all due to choice. Choice is powerful stuff.

You’ve made great progress thus far- you can go as far as your choices can take you.

Best wishes.

Well… it just looks like a sodium overload and you will probably lose all that water rentention this next week when you tighten up your nutrition & exercise.

Joyn, you are doing great. It’s refreshing to read how accountable you are. I need to go back to that.

Peace,

It’s so easy to fall back into the old routine of grazing. You are in good form, writing about where you got off track during the weekend. It makes me think about where I got off track in December… oh joy. Let me count the ways I went wrong lol

You’ve done so well on your past trips… I wish you well in Chicago!

“a cup full of egg bake for breakfast”

I’ve never heard of egg bake before.

I just want to add to your encouragement. You have done great so far and life is always going to be full of ups-and-downs. The important side is it was only a small blowout. You will easily bounce back and good luck :)
