Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

November 20, 2007 · 11 comments

Last week I hosted a group of 5th graders (my son’s lego robotic team) to watch Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? on FOX. If you’ve never seen the show it can be quite maddening. Because of the adults. The adults on the show are usually really dumb. Last week it was Kellie Pickler, who did no favors to blondes around the world.

Having watched the show with 5th graders I can confirm I am indeed smarter than a 5th grader. But apparently I don’t write much better than one. According to The Blog Readability Test you only need an Elementary School Reading Level to comprehend this blog.

Here are the scores for the top 10 commenters on this blog for this month (to date):

uh oh, I better get the books out and start blogging “smarter”! :) I wonder what the criteria is based on?

Great post John.

The reading level for my blog is “College” most likely due to the run-on sentences, self-invented vocabulary, and modular quasi-phonetic non-speak which, by the by, is the stuff that got me through college.

That was harsh. Wow.

At least no one will ever accuse me of being elitist.

Although…

My history blog http://thehistorydump.wordpress.com qualified as genius

My political humor blog [to offensive to link here] qualified as elementary. Since I was going for sophomoric humor on that blog I am cool with that.

lol, well I think it quiet likely that all this site does is spit out a random value then save it into a database so future requests give the same answer. Would be a hell of a lot easier than actually doing text analysis.

Glad my Master’s Degree is coming in handy. Wish it would help pay the student loans too!

Oh my! I am not in the top 10! Forgive my slacking, John-I’ve been traipsing about New York sucking down pizza and chomping on roasted nuts from corner stands. Back down to business now. Hope you are having a good trip!

Oh and HEY! As someone who is relatively well-trained in the art of performing readability analyses on text, I can tell you that this tool LIES, if that makes you feel any better. You are so much smarter than a fifth grader, John.
