Thanks, John! I sent an e-mail to the leader today telling her to put me on the roster! My next step is to buy some shoes and a soccer ball and practice dribbling. Thanks for your support. :)

Sarah - I think that when you have an opportunity to get in shape, make friends and build confidence that you have to accept a little risk and just GO FOR IT!

If this is truly a recreational team, and there is an understanding that it is open to people who have never played soccer before, then I believe you should be welcomed with open arms.

I'll tell you right now that you will be getting the workouts of your life - soccer will really keep your heartrate up. Your job, once you learn the game and figure out your role in it, will be to carefully monitor your heart rate during the practices, scrimages and games, and to adapt accordingly. When I played in a game with a bunch of 10 year olds I needed to take breaks and since we were not substituting I needed to do it while playing the game, so I walked sometime instead of ran. That was ok in the game, and it should be ok if you are in a real rec league.

I would be open with your team from the beginning - you are looking to learn a lifetime sport, have fun, and get some good exercise in.

Soccer is like any other sport where all it takes is making a good play or two and you'll be hooked.

Good luck!

Hi John,

I came across your blog while looking for info on overweight people playing soccer. I am 32 and about 75 pounds overweight. I have a chance to be on a recreational soccer team and I think it could change my life. I could get in shape, make friends, build confidence. But I've never played soccer and I'm afraid it will be too hard, I'll fail, people will laugh, etc. I do go to the gym a few times a week, so I'm not totally UNfit, I just don't know if I'm biting off more than I can chew. What do you think?
