Finding a Healthier Lifestyle

I would encourage you to take a look at Finding a Healthier Lifestyle - Committing to Change posted recently on dumb little man.  The author has experienced a 40 pound weight loss that he attributes to these key steps:

  • Acknowledge Self Destructive Behaviors
  • Realize the Succumbing to these Pressures is a Choice
  • Resolve to Change and Commit
  • Prepare to be Self-Motivated

I really relate to what he is saying, and have been making a conscious effort to follow these steps.

I’ll give last night as a great example.  I drove my 80 minute commute home and passed on the opportunity to stop at fast food like I would have in the past (I have acknowledged this as a self destructive behavior).  I made a choice to wait until I got home to eat and then to have a chopped salad and some soy crisps (I chose not to succumb to something bad).  I resolved though that before I ate I would get a cardio workout in when I got home (what a big change from hitting the couch).  I don’t have a personal trainer pushing me and the house was empty - but I put in my time on the treadmill regardless (I was self motivated).

It’s really all about choice.  And I am choosing to finding a healthier lifestyle.

It took me a while to realize the last one. I had to get it in my head that no matter how much people encourage me/made me feel bad, I still had to be self-motivated.

You have hit the nail on the head! So much of weight loss is in the mind. This is why diets don’t work in my experience - they take no consideration of the mental and pyschological changes that need to be made.

Well done, you’re really heading in the right direction. Best of luck.

Thanks mate! At this point in my diet I feel like I am learning a lot and establishing some good habits. It isn’t translating into big weight losses which is a little frustrating, however I have to remember it took my 20 years to get my body into this shape, I should not expect to get it fixed in less than a couple.
