Weekly Update - 8/19/07

August 19, 2007 · 2 comments

  • Diet starting weight: 295
  • Week starting weight: 291
  • Today’s weight: 293
  • Week weight lost: -2 lbs
  • Total weight lost: 2 lbs

Obviously gaining 2 pounds in a week is a big disappointment to me.  However, as I have written recently I am trying to focus on my decisions and not worry about the short term variance that is going to be seen in the results.  Still, this really opens my eyes to the need to keep those poor decisions to a minimum.

Things I did well this week:

  • I built an initial strength training program and stuck to it every day.
  • I continued to whittle down my eating habits at places like Bruegger’s, where a few weeks ago a normal lunch there for me would be 2 bagels with cream cheese and bowl of soup and the bagel bite that comes with it, and a large chocolate chip cookie.  Last week I had gotten down to one bagel with cream cheese, a cup of soup and a chocolate chip cookie (these are HUGE cookies by the way).  This week I replaced the chocolate chip cookie with a small caramel filled chocolate.  One step at a time!
  • Except as noted below I stuck pretty close to my eating plan - and no Nutella!
  • I just admitted “failure” to a lot more people than just myself.

Things I did not so well this week:

  • Still have not articulated weight loss goals and milestones.
  • Ordered a medium unbuttered popcorn at a movie theatre despite what I wrote about movie theatre popcorn.
  • Still no cardio.
  • I probably wouldn’t have gained weight this week except for the fact that yesterday we spent the whole day and night at a friend’s house whose boyfriend is an awesome cook - way too much homemade pizza and cheese bread for lunch, and a feast of corn on the cob, grilled veggies, chicken and steak for dinner.  Plus a half dozen beers.  I’m still stuffed.  I’ve got to learn how to manage these situations.

I’m staying focused on the decisions and not the results, however this week there were some poor decisions that had a bearing on those results and I’ve got to believe I can improve on those poor decisions next week.

Two pounds is nothin’…probably just water gain from last night’s dinner. It’s great that you stuck to the weights. Everything I am reading says it is really more important to get that in place than cardio. And fretting about the weight from week to week is futile-you’re right. It’s going to take a while to lose it, so time is not a good thing to feel pressured by. Another blogger, who hit her goal after SIX YEARS was reflecting on that fact once and said she was glad that she didn’t set time limits. She got there anyway….with treats along the way…eating for REAL LIFE, and didn’t feel complied to say, “Well, I feel really proud of myself, and I”m glad I lost all of this weight, but there WAS that week back in 2003 when I gained 2 pounds instead of posting a loss. So….the rest of the six years were kind of meaningless after that.” One week is nothing, you are right. I think it’s more important that you started a new healthy habit with those weights.

Thanks for the comment Angela - taking the long term view is so important I think. I’m looking at about 2 years at a pound a week, and you know what? If it ends up taking me 4 I’ll be pretty damned happy. You can’t really know how long it is going to take but what you can know is that you continued to do the right things along the way. And that’s what I need to focus on.
